Ann Marie and Tim married in a shot-gun style wedding after knowing each other for a few months. They had fallen madly in love and despite the warnings of family members and friends, they knew that their relationship was going to be different and would weather any storm. They were young and idealistic. However, from the first month of marriage, it was obvious to both of them that they had made a mistake and that the naysayers had been right. Now what would they do? She wanted out but was too embarrassed to hear “I told you so” from friends and family. And he just wanted out. They managed to limp along for many years of arguments and threats and eventually there was no love left. The sad part was that they were both Christians and despite going to church and attending Bible studies, and reading countless marriage books, nothing they tried had a lasting effect on their relationship.
Finally after thirteen years of unhappiness, she decided to consult with an attorney. And in a “last ditch effort”, after gathering the necessary information to file for divorce, she cried out to God and begged Him to speak His will into her life. It was a Friday afternoon and she told Him that she would fast and pray the entire weekend until she received His direction. His direction came quick and clear. She was to change. She was shocked because more than anything, she felt that she had been a victim and in many ways she was, but deep in her spirit, she knew that she had heard from God and was humbled into obedience.
